I didn't follow exactly what the issue is here, so I'll just explain
soft shadows. Since there is no way to tell PostScript to use varying
levels of transparency when drawing the shadow, an application has to
work around that glaring omission by rendering the soft shadow or
transparency and everything beneath it into a bitmap, then put that
bitmap into the PostScript. So if your workflow uses lo-res images
when building ads, and then you print or export eps/pdf, any soft
shadows will be drawn with whatever lo-res images happen to be
beneath them.
