problems with soft shadow

My guess is that when Xpress prints the eps or when you distill it to  
a pdf, those processes are not rendering the text in the same way  
that Creator renders text, so the glyphs are appearing thicker or  
thinner (you didn't say which text looked bold) than the text that  
Creator rendered under the soft shadow into the bitmap.

You could work around it by converting the text to paths before  
exporting the eps.
