STOP adding colors to my list??

I understand that its normal (not a malfunction) for C8 to create a new
color in the color list when it imports element that contains a color
not currently on its list or rather if the color does exist (ie red or
blue) and if that color does not match the default "formula" aka CMYK
breakdown that it will create a new color (ex: Red 1, Red 2, Blue 1) but
my list keeps growing.
Every so often, I delete the new colors but of course that changes those
elements of color to Black - so, then I have to go back and make them
the correct colors. But overtime, in the process of
clipping/cutting/pasting my list grows and I have to do it all over again.
The issue is that I work off standing docs. and I am constantly going
back to an old doc. and beinging elements/information forward - each
time I do this I get more color on my list.
So, if this is not malfunction is there a way to control the growth. ie
either forcing the import elemnt or color to conform to currents doc.
color scheme or a way to control usage - similar to font usage? In
otherwords, if the program can prompt "missing font..replace or
whatever" couldn't asked what you want to do with colors??
In the short term, it would help if there was at least a conversion
script that would allow me to convert elements with given color to the
current color scheme. So, if imported a element that had a custom blue
and i deleted the custom blue (ex: blue 1) that it wouldn't turn the
elemnt to black but rather the default blue in the color list.
I can deal with deleting rogue blues and reds but then having to go back
in and locate those elements and tagging them with color can be time
consuming and worse yet, if i miss one..ouch!
