Crazy Colors & EPS Files

We use DCS 2 files because Creator does a more accurate job of separating
colors than our RIP software, which has a tendency to to ignore trapping
and/or overprint options set in Creator. We've used DCS 2 for years, too,
for the same reason. We would prefer to use composites because of their
size. We recently switched to Xinet OPI and upgraded our RIP software, but
the preliminary composite testing was exhibited similar problems and time
constraints prevented us from pursuing it further. I don't know if we've
ever considered using DCS 1 because of the 5 separate files that are
generated make managing them messy. Since our OPI and print processes are
performed on one device, size is not an issue in terms of capacity and
bandwidth. If your RIP software is able to separate composite files
correctly, I can't think of a good reason not to go with them.

An EPS is an unseparated postscript file, a DCS 1.0 is pre-separated and
contains 5 files for a CMYK file, a DCS 2.0 is also pre-separated but
the 5 files are all in one file.

DCS 2 files are typically 4 times larger than an EPS for no added
benefit when dealing with CMYK, in my experience. If you are dealing
with spot color, duotones, or multi-channel color out of PhotoShop then
you would need to use DC2 - there may be other uses as well.

I would think your IT department would be happy to have you switch to
EPS if your workflow has no problems with it, it'll greatly save on
server space and network traffic.
