PDF Gradations - redux

When I export a block as PDF (either native from C8 or thru  
distiller) that contains a one color gradation  to white..why doesn't  
the gradation look  like  the original doc. The PDF version appears  
to be much more saturated and spread over a wider area than it  
appears on the screen.

Also I found occasions when black is used and the black contains fine  
lines..visible only in the PDF

Everything prints correctly

Is there a setting i should fix??
