alternative to numeric [enter] for switching between Arrow and Text tool?

No. Command-tab is still wired to that action, although OSX stole it  
for app switching. You can also hit T to choose the text tool.  
Clicking outside of the active text block will then allow you to use  
the other tool selector keys, so you could hit A to get to the arrow  
tool.
