OT: electronic tear sheets

We send either PDF or PS composite files to our workflow software (Newsway).
The workflow sends one copy to the rip which does the separation, and one
copy to Distiller ( if it's already a PDF it just passes through).
A person could do pretty much the same thing without workflow software. The
trick for us was to let the RIP separate the page and not send separations.
I think with the Harlequinn RIPs we use, you could pick up the original file
after it's been ripped and hand it off to Distiller.
If you were okay with sending composites to the RIP you could also have a
robot box setup to watch a folder for PS files. The robot would then send a
copy off to Distiller and a copy off to your RIP's hotfolder.
Seems like the RIPS will also recombine separated pages, so maybe you could
work out some workflow that took in separations, RIPed them to film or
plate, then picked up the separations, recombined them and created a PS file
for Distiller.
They just keep pushing us towards the holy grail of having a big red button
on the outside of the building that you just walk up and push and out comes
a finished product.
