If it helps your firewall to match users to a domain name, DynDNS
might be worth trying:
http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/

Ideally you'd use a VPN, or if you have someone wise in the ways of
SSH tunneling, that can work too. Of course if you can use SSH, you
should also be using sftp instead of ftp.
