No, the FPO exists as long as the original exists. When a graphic is
placed in the HiRes repository, a LoRes is generated on another
volume. The LoRes is basically just a thumbnail that contains a
resource with the path to the HiRes. When the composer places the
LoRes in the ad, it looks just like the original, but is really small,
like 12k. When the ad is imaged, the OPI system swaps in the HiRes
into the ad on a machine that is connected more directly to the HiRes
repository, significantly reducing network traffic.
We have used this system for years with EPS files and have only
recently been getting ads containing PDFs.
