Rick,

We had the problem of Creator crashing on us too for the same reason  
you stated. I think if it is a particularly fancy font, and if  
outline and/or shadow is on, that's just a lot of points. I got rid  
of the shadow/outline that was giving one of our designers a problem,  
and then convert text to path worked just fine. Actually, text to  
path on shadowed/outlined text doesn't make sense logically, as one  
could apply shadows and an outline effect after the conversion. In  
other words, convert text to path is expecting plain text, without  
any text effects applied?
