We had the same problem when we went from Creator 7 to Creator 8. We found that it was actually the way that the colors were named. When creating a new color, artists have a tendency to simply leave the colors named New Color 1, New Color 2, New Color 3, 0r just light blue. We had one ad that the color was a midnight blue, but kept printing a very light violet. We recreated all of the colors, but had the same result. When we printed the ad from Creator 7, it would print a midnight blue, when printed from Creator 8 it would print as a light violet. We then change the color to its proper CMYK values (A901) and printed the ad, it printed from Creator 7 and Creator 8 properly. We found that the New Color 1 on our color palette, for some reason was picking up the values of the last New Color 1 that went through the rip. We have now started naming newly created color using their proper CMYK values. We haven't had the problem since this past November. The colors not printing properly only happened with 2 ads and it was random. But since we started naming the colors using CMYK values and using a unique name, we haven't had the problem. I selected "My > Fonts" but Creator still uses the old list. Creator uses which ever fonts you currently have enabled in Font Book. I also believe that you misunderstand how Font Book works. Collections are just a way of organizing groups of fonts. Like you can add all handwriting fonts to a collection and all serif fonts to another. The first 4 collections (All Fonts, User, Computer, Classic Mac OS) show you which fonts are in which folder on disk. User fonts come from your home folder (/Users/yourname/Library/Fonts). Computer fonts come from / System/Library/Fonts and /Library/Fonts. Classic Mac OS fonts come from /System Folder/Fonts *if* you you have OS9 installed. Simply selecting those collections in the list does not "designate which font collection is first choice", and I'm not sure what you mean by "first choice". I'd also suggest upgrading Creator to 7.0.6, just because it's best to user the most current version of that release. (Or buy 8.0.2.) _________________________________________________________ Steve Mills Me: 952-401-6255 Senior Software Architect MultiAd smills@multiad.com www.multi-ad.com From jkerr at njherald.com Mon Aug 11 09:35:17 2008 From: jkerr at njherald.com (Jaime Kerr) Date: Mon Aug 11 09:36:54 2008 Subject: Document set script Message-ID: I?m setting up different size packages for our website. A little, but not seeing exactly what you want is a bit confusing. When a *new* document is created, all pages will be the same size. You could use a script to create the documents, which would make the doc, then resizes the pages. Or if you go the stationery route, you'll have to write your own script to let the user choose which one they want, etc. _________________________________________________________ Steve Mills Me: 952-401-6255 Senior Software Architect MultiAd smills@multiad.com www.multi-ad.com From joe at wacondatrader.com Tue Aug 12 15:44:46 2008 From: joe at wacondatrader.com (Joe Sporleder) Date: Tue Aug 12 15:47:28 2008 Subject: Creator and Leopard and Other Stuff Message-ID: <69328DB6-C917-4076-9BCA-8244A9A7B4BF@wacondatrader.com> I have the need to upgrade a workstation (to a Mac mini Intel), which will come with MacOS X Leopard. I cannot get PopChar to automatically recognize what font is being used in the Creator document. Checking the box "As in Document" (in the PopChar prefs) does not help. I contacted the makers of PopChar and here is what they said: The "As in Document" feature works only for applications that satisfy certain requirements: An application needs either a Font menu in the menu bar (with a checkmark in front of the current font) or AppleScript support that lets other applications query the current font. As far as I know, Creator Pro does not meet these requirements. Sorry. Does anyone have any input on this? And does Creator has AppleScript support that lets other applications query the current font being used? After you mentioned it, I have actually had a corrupted file a time or two when saving from Photoshop to my server, but thought it may have actually been a problem with the server. The one issue I do recall having problems with was trying to print to the Adobe PDF printer and choosing the server as the destination. It runs through everything but the files never appear. "takes full advantage of the Unicode features in OS X" is pretty vague. Got a specific question? I'm not sure what the blue and black characters are, because I'm using a demo version which shows the basic glyphs as black, but all the rest as grey (disabled). > So I guess Creator supports Unicode, but just not fully : ) PopChar is making a rather broad statement. There are many meanings for "support", but like I said before, Creator does indeed support Unicode in every sense, except for the pdf output. I can insert any glyph from OS X's built-in Character Palette (and PopChar is just a slightly fancier version of that), so I'm not sure why PopChar is not letting your insert some glyphs. My local newspaper uses "multi-ad" to do their layouts. I'm assuming this is the right mailing list for this, but I'm not sure. The problem is that when I send them (and when other business send them) pdf documents, they routinely treat the whole thing as an image and as a result the text is "halftoned" or "screened". I have tried to get them to fix this problem, but they seem either not to be bothered by it or simply incapable of solving it or both. Not being familiar with either their production system or Multi-ad, I'm hoping for a general troubleshooting outline that I can give them, or perhaps even use to help them troubleshoot the problem. I know that they use a typesetter with at least 2400 dpi and their news text is crisp, so my text should be also. I'm guessing that "multi-ad" might have different importing options and that they are importing it as an "image" rather than postscript. It's possible that my pdf might have problems, but I don't have problems with other newspapers and "screened text" is a problem on most of the ads that they print - it ain't just me. Our system does not allow us to use pdfs imported into multi-ad so we have to convert them into eps form and import them into multi-ad. We do have to run them through a series of steps first to make sure they are cmyk and text is outline and optimized if they have a color issue (rgb) in any form we have to open them in photoshop to color correct to cmyk and make sure that any black text or solid black images are only on the black channel to accomplish this and retain hi quality text we open the pdf using a very high resolution at least 600 then when corrections are made we knock down the image to 200 to 150 and save as an eps. Creator doesn't support Asian fonts. According to the PopChar docs, glyphs that appear in blue are not actually available in the current font: "characters that are substituted from a different font appear in blue" What PopChar sends us is rtf data that says to use the font you have selected in PopChar's popup (which would be the same font in use in Creator if certain conditions are met), and the Unicode character sent is indeed that Unicode character. The problem is that the font does not contain a glyph for that character, so you get the box. Bottom line; you can't use any of the blue characters with Creator. You need a Roman font that contains the glyphs you want to use. _________________________________________________________ Steve Mills Me: 952-401-6255 Senior Software Architect MultiAd smills@multiad.com www.multi-ad.com From rgaskin at wdt.net Thu Aug 14 09:40:04 2008 From: rgaskin at wdt.net (Rick Gaskin) Date: Thu Aug 14 09:48:04 2008 Subject: blurred shadows fixed?? So your right, a character in blue means its coming from a different font. Most of the Apple apps all use the Apple text editor engine, which supports tons of languages and scripts, because Apple products sell in tons of countries. Creator has to use its own cross-platform text engine (for obvious reasons) and is only sold in a few countries and supports a dozen languages or so. _________________________________________________________ Steve Mills Me: 952-401-6255 Senior Software Architect MultiAd smills@multiad.com www.multi-ad.com From rgaskin at wdt.net Thu Aug 14 12:14:23 2008 From: rgaskin at wdt.net (Rick Gaskin) Date: Thu Aug 14 12:33:44 2008 Subject: blurred shadows fixed?? The blurred shadow is being turned into an rgb bitmap. That causes it to show up on all plates. This will not be changed until the next major version, because a very substantial section of code needs to be changed and months worth of new code has to be written just so the cmyk shadow can be handled in its native cmyk space. All colors throughout the entire document have to be converted to rgb in these cases, otherwise your Cyan would appear as different colors on different pages, rather than at least looking uniform. _________________________________________________________ Steve Mills Me: 952-401-6255 Senior Software Architect MultiAd smills@multiad.com www.multi-ad.com From smills at multi-ad.com Thu Aug 14 14:04:20 2008 From: smills at multi-ad.com (Steve Mills) Date: Thu Aug 14 14:07:42 2008 Subject: blurred shadows fixed?? There is no workaround. It works correctly if you don't care about rgb in your output. Otherwise, don't use them in 8.0.x, or keep them black, or export the object you want to have a shadow, withOUT the shadow, to eps, open it in Photoshop, add the drop shadow, keep it in cmyk space, save that as an eps, and place that back into Creator. _________________________________________________________ Steve Mills Me: 952-401-6255 Senior Software Architect MultiAd smills@multiad.com www.multi-ad.com From rgaskin at wdt.net Thu Aug 14 14:07:30 2008 From: rgaskin at wdt.net (Rick Gaskin) Date: Thu Aug 14 14:13:02 2008 Subject: blurred shadows fixed?? Soft shadows isn't the only thing we've done in the past few years. ;) Plus you get the benefit of all the cumulative bug fixes and compatibility upgrades to stay current with OS X, XP and Vista. _________________________________________________________ Steve Mills Me: 952-401-6255 Senior Software Architect MultiAd smills@multiad.com www.multi-ad.com From eric at ozarksfn.com Fri Aug 15 09:30:31 2008 From: eric at ozarksfn.com (Eric Tietze) Date: Fri Aug 15 09:34:07 2008 Subject: blurred shadows fixed??
