Let's look at the pros and cons of upgrading to 8:

Pros:
Lots of new features that increase productivity.
Runs natively on Intel and PPC.
Lots of bug fixes and improvements.

Cons:
Soft shadows only "work" if background is white. They also work fine  
in other cases if you don't need colors to remain at exact values.
