What happens if you export to eps then turn that into a pdf with  
Distiller or Preview or whatever? You could always break up the  
gradient into multiple rectangles. The top one solid white, then the  
white to red gradient with only 2 color points, and finally the red  
solid fill. It's inelegant, but it's the best workaround I can think  
of without at least *trying* the 8.0.3 beta and verifying that the bug  
has been fixed and then *you'd have a good pdf*.
