Font appears?

So, we have had some issues with fonts and Intel based mac's running creator
8.0.2 most of the time, they are just missing and when you launch something
like photoshop CS3 or InDesign CS3 on the same machine they are there and
usable.
Most recently a user was complaining about the fact that she couldn't use
Zapf Dingbats in Creator 8.0.2 they would just show up as a block character
for every letter. I told her trying doing the same thing in Photoshop CS3
and the fonts worked fine. The crazy part is that we closed out of the
creator file with the Zapf Dingbat block text and reopened it and all the
Zapf dingbat characters were there!!!
I have tried a few times to delete the Pref file, and this didn't correct
it. What is happening?
