Transparent PDFs

To me, that's completely different than having the background of the  
pdf be "transparent" as you described ("transparent where there were  
no elements"). What I believe is happening is that a pdf must contain  
a page box behind all content, and that page box is white. So what I  
don't know is if pdf's are required to have that background box, or if  
all pdf rendering engines draw the background box as white by default,  
and if there is an option for a pdf to have "no background", therefore  
making it "transparent".
